How to read a topographic map
Your phone’s map app is a marvel right up until the battery dies, the cell tower goes down, or you drop it in a creek. A paper topographic map has none of those failure modes. It also does something your phone rarely shows you clearly: it tells you what the ground actually does between here and there. Learn to read one and you can look at a sheet of paper and see hills, cliffs, and drainages before your legs find them the hard way.
Start with the scale
Most US hiking maps are USGS 7.5-minute quads at 1:24,000 scale. That means one inch on the map is 24,000 inches on the ground, or about 2,000 feet. A mile is roughly 2.6 inches. Get that ratio into your head and distances stop being abstract. A route that spans four inches of map is not a quick side trip.
Contour lines are the whole game
Those brown squiggles are contour lines. Every point on a single line sits at the same elevation. On a standard 7.5-minute quad the contour interval is usually 40 feet, printed in the margin, so check it: maps of flat country may use 10 feet and mountain maps may use 80.
Three rules cover most of what you need:
- Lines close together mean steep. Lines nearly touching mean cliff. Lines far apart mean gentle ground.
- Every fifth line is darker (an index contour) and labeled with its elevation. Count up or down from those.
- Contour lines crossing a stream bend into a V that points uphill, toward the source. This is the fastest way to tell which way water flows and which way is up in a drainage.
Learn five terrain shapes
You can identify almost any landform from five patterns. A hilltop is a series of closed loops, smallest loop on top. A ridge is a long U or V of contours pointing away from high ground. A valley or draw is the same shape pointing toward high ground, usually with a stream. A saddle is the low point between two hilltops, shaped like an hourglass. A depression is a closed loop with small tick marks pointing inward, and it is rare enough that finding one feels like a prize.
Sit down with a quad of terrain you already know and match the lines to the hills you have walked. It clicks fast.
Colors, symbols, and the margin
Green is vegetation, white is open ground, blue is water, black is human-made stuff, and red or gray tints mark roads and urban areas. The margin holds the legend, the contour interval, the map’s publication date (an old map may show roads and trails that no longer exist), and the declination diagram you will need the day you pair this map with a compass. Compass work is its own skill and worth learning next, because a map without a bearing only gets you so far in flat timber or fog.
Where to get maps
The USGS store sells printed quads for about $15, and the same maps are free as PDFs through the USGS topoView site. CalTopo and Gaia let you print custom maps centered on your actual route instead of whatever falls on one quad. Print at home on regular paper and it dies in the first rainstorm, so use waterproof paper (Rite in the Rain sells inkjet sheets) or a map case. A gallon freezer bag works fine and costs a dime.
A topographic map of your home region belongs in your bug out bag next to the water filter and the ferro rod. It weighs two ounces and never needs charging, which is more than you can say for anything else in the bag.
