How to navigate without a compass

Best case, you never need any of this, because a real compass weighs an ounce and lives in your pack. But gear gets lost, borrowed, and dropped in rivers, and the sky keeps working when your equipment quits. These methods are worth an afternoon of practice, if only so that being without a compass is an inconvenience instead of an emergency.

The shadow stick method

This is the most reliable daytime technique and it needs one stick and fifteen minutes.

Push a stick about two feet long into flat ground where it casts a clean shadow. Mark the tip of the shadow with a rock. Wait 15 to 20 minutes, then mark the new shadow tip. The sun moved west, so the shadow moved east: a line from the first mark to the second runs west to east, first mark west. Stand with the first mark at your left foot and the second at your right and you are facing north (in the northern hemisphere).

Longer waits give more accurate lines. If you are staying put for an hour anyway, keep marking and use the full arc.

The watch method

If you wear an analog watch (or can picture one on your phone), point the hour hand at the sun. Halfway between the hour hand and 12 is roughly south. Before noon, measure the halfway point clockwise; after noon, counterclockwise. On daylight saving time, use 1 instead of 12.

This is a rough tool. It can be off by 20 degrees or more depending on season and where you sit in your time zone. Treat it as “generally south,” not a bearing.

Finding north at night

The North Star, Polaris, sits within a degree of true north and does not move all night. Everyone says “find the North Star” and skips the finding part, so here it is: locate the Big Dipper, take the two stars at the far edge of its cup (the side away from the handle), and extend the line between them about five times its own length. The moderately bright star you land on is Polaris. It is not the brightest star in the sky, which surprises people. Confirm by checking that it sits at the tail end of the Little Dipper’s handle.

Face Polaris and you face true north, no declination math required. Cloudy night, no reading.

Terrain, sun arc, and honest guessing

The sun rises roughly east and sets roughly west everywhere on Earth, drifting toward the southeast/southwest in northern winters and northeast/northwest in summers. Even that loose fact keeps you from walking a slow circle, which is what people genuinely do without a reference.

Terrain gives you more. Rivers flow downhill toward bigger rivers and eventually toward roads and towns, which is why “follow water downstream” is old advice (it fails in swamp and canyon country, so apply judgment). Ridgelines, power lines, and fence lines all run straight and make usable handrails. Before you lose your bearings, note the big linear feature you crossed on the way in: if the highway runs east-west and you walked north from it, then any southbound line eventually hits pavement.

And the moss thing: moss does not reliably grow on the north side of trees. It grows where moisture lingers, which in a shady hollow can be every side. Retire that one.

The real lesson

Every method above gives you direction, not position. Knowing which way is north only helps if you know roughly where you are and where you are trying to go, which is why the actual skill is paying attention on the way in. Note landmarks, note your handrails, and glance backward now and then so you know what the return trip looks like. A topographic map of the area, even without a compass, multiplies the value of everything here.
